An A+ grade should mean "proven edge". We put every graded capper on our platform to a test: can their record be distinguished from a coin flip? The answer will annoy a lot of leaderboards.

A+ or A-luck — statistical audit of capper grades infographic

The data: every figure below is computed from the CappersTracked dataset — 1,460 tracked handicappers, 170,170 graded picks, 372 currently graded (protected variant). Snapshot: 2026-07-29. Simulations are Monte Carlo runs with a fixed seed — every chart in this series is reproducible.

1. The Test

Imagine a bettor with zero skill betting -110 lines — a coin with a vig. We can compute exactly how often that coin-flipper accidentally produces a +8% ROI (the raw threshold behind an A+) purely by luck:

P(lucky +8% ROI) = P( W ≥ 1.08 · n1.909 ),  W ~ Binomial(n, 0.5)
Fig 8 — At 20 picks a coin-flipper fakes an A+ ROI 25% of the time; at 300 picks, only 1.2%.
Fig 8 — At 20 picks a coin-flipper fakes an A+ ROI 25% of the time; at 300 picks, only 1.2%.

The pattern is the whole story: small samples hand out fake edges constantly, big samples almost never do. That is variance, and it is the reason grades without volume are guesses.

2. The Audit: Every A+ on the Platform

We audited all 23 A+ cappers. For each one we took their real protected ROI and their real pick count, and computed a z-score — how many coin-standard-deviations their ROI sits above break-even, given how many picks they have. A z-score above 1.645 means the record beats break-even with 95% confidence:

z = ROIσ / √n,  σ = 0.96 (per-bet sd of a -110 line)
Fig 9 — 18 of 23 A+ cappers clear break-even with 95% confidence. The rest cannot yet be told apart from a coin.

3. The Brutal Summary

Across all 372 graded cappers, only 33 (8.9%) clear the break-even bar. And here is the honesty kicker: at the 95% level, pure chance would produce about 19 passes on its own — so even most of those "proven" records are noise. Crank the bar to 99% and only 12 cappers remain (chance alone would fake about 4). Real skill exists — it is just rare, and it needs volume to show up.

Of the 23 A+ grades, 18 clear the 95% bar. The median graded capper on the platform sits at -0.3% ROI — right at the noise floor.

Read this carefully: this is not a hit-piece on A+ cappers. It is a statement about information. Most A+ records simply do not contain enough picks yet for skill to be provable — exactly the gap our Bayesian shrinkage grade was built to bridge. Shrinkage keeps the grade honest at small samples; the statistical bar shows you when honesty becomes proof.

4. What This Means For Following Cappers

  • A grade is an estimate, not a verdict. It ranks likely skill; it does not certify it.
  • Volume decides how much any record means. 300+ picks is where the coin-flip noise finally dies.
  • Watch the L30 trend, not just the all-time grade. A capper's recent form is the freshest signal — and as our grade stability study shows, grades move far more often than people expect.

Every profile shows picks, record, ROI and the trend — judge the evidence yourself on the capper leaderboard.
